USAT AGE GROUP RULE
USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport of triathlon, instituted a new age group rule in 2005. Your race age is your age on December 31, 2010 Therefore, if you age up into a new age group during the calendar year, you race in that new age group for the 2010 season. For example, Sally is 34 years old on the day of the Firebird Triathlon on February 21, 2010. Her birthday is on July 15, 2010 and on her birthday she will turn 35. Therefore, Sally races in the 35-39 age group for all of 2010, including the Firebird Triathlon.
REGISTRATION/PACKET PICK-UP
Registration and packet pick up will be from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on March 6 at Landis Cyclery, Warner and Rural, Tempe.
Registration will also be on Race Day starting at 6:30am and ending promptly at 7:30am. We are very serious when we say it ends at 7:30am. If you show up after that time you will not be allowed to race. If you do not think you can make it by that time, please pick up your packet at Landis on Saturday.
FIREBIRD TEAM TRIATHLON CHALLENGE
USAT and the ITU have been experimenting with a new triathlon event has received rave reviews from athletes and spectators. The team triathlon has each athlete team member doing an entire mini-sprint triathlon as part of the team competition, not just one of the events (swim, bike or run) as is usually the case in relay done in a triathlon competition. The Team Triathlon World Championships took place at the Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines, Iowa last summer and can be viewed on YOUTUBE (link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhwR4OMMSA0). The ITU is hoping the Team Triathlon can be the next triathlon medal event at the Olympics and USAT is hoping to integrate the Team Triathlon concept into collegiate and elite competition.
The format is still experimental and the Firebird Triathlon is the first triathlon in the world to offer the Team Relay concept to age group and collegiate competitors. We will be providing feedback to USAT on the competition so your suggestions and comments are important. Who knows, in the 2016 Olympics, when the Team Triathlon starts, you can tell everybody who will listen that you did the first Team Triathlon way back when at the Firebird Triathlon.
Teams are composed of three athletes. Each athlete will do a 250 meter swim, a 4 mile bike and a 1 mile run. To make it fair, divisions in the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge are 3 Men, 3 Women, 2 Men/1 Woman and 1 Man/2 Women. With each athlete doing an entire mini-sprint triathlon, the Team Challenge format is exciting and a true test of speed, endurance and fitness. When each athlete finishes his or her leg of the team race, he or she will hand their chip to the next athlete at the swim start.
The Firebird Triathlon is uniquely able to host the Team Triathlon Challenge. With Firebird Lake to swim in, closed roads on the bike, and a run inside of Firebird International Raceway, we have the ideal course for this competition. No traffic and no swimming pool - just flat and fast racing.
The Firebird Triathlon will start at 7:30am with individual and standard relay competitors. We expect to be finished with the Firebird Triathlon at about 10:00am. Fifteen minutes after the last Firebird Triathlon Finisher, we will start the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge. You are welcome, even encouraged, to enter the Firebird Triathlon as well as the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge. It should be no problem for you to do both events.
To enter the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge simply enter your team via Active (link) or download an entry blank and send it in. Questions? Email .
COLLEGIATE DIVISION at the Firebird Triathlon
The Firebird Triathlon is offering collegiate athletes two ways to compete at the Firebird Triathlon. Collegiate competitors can enter as an individual in the Firebird Triathlon and/or as a team in the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge. Collegiate athletes can compete in one or both.
The Firebird Triathlon will have a special wave (with a discounted entry fee) for all athletes who are current full time students at a college or university. Awards will be given for the top five men and the top five women collegiate athletes. Team scores will not be kept for the individual collegiate division of the Firebird Triatthlon.
Team scores will be kept for the Firebird Team Triathlon Challenge. Points will be awarded for relays in the 2 divisions - 1 Man/2 Women and 2 Men/1 Women. Points will not be awarded for the all men's or all women's Team Challenge. Points will be awarded for each relay finish as follows:
1st Place - 25 points
2nd Place - 18 points
3rd Place - 12 points
4th Place - 8 points
5th Place - 4 points

SWIM

The swim will be an
open water swim in Firebird Lake.
The water in Firebird Lake will be a bit chilly. Wetsuits are encouraged.
Please check back. Information on wetsuit rental will be posted shortly.
The water in Firebird Lake is clean and tested to be safe for swimming. The Firebird Triathlon has a long history in Arizona, with triathlons being run at the lake in the 80s, 90s and most recently for five years starting in 1999. Firebird Lake has an undeserved reputation for poor water quality. Because the water table from which the water is pumped to fill the lake is briney, the lake has a salty taste. Before you make a judgment about the water, please email racedirector@gmail.com with questions or talk to one of the many, many Arizona triathletes who have done this event

temperature will be in the low 60s for the race in Firebird Lake and wetsuits
are strongly encouraged. Though it is a short swim no matter the distance of the
swim you are doing, most athletes will want a wetsuit for buoyancy and warmth.
