In New York the snow is piling up.  In Chicago the wind whipping off Lake Michigan is frigid.  In Edmonton the winter never seems to end.  Havasu Triathlon 2010 invites you to escape the never ending cold and gloom of winter and enjoy Spring Break in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.  There is no such thing as winter in Lake Havasu!  Race week temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s and the only wind is a gentle cooling breeze off of the lake.

Only a short drive from Phoenix, Las Vegas and Southern California, Lake Havasu offers the perfect blend of triathlon and Spring Break.  Come to compete in the first triathlon of the 2010 season and enjoy all that Lake Havasu has to offer – boating, swimming, water skiing, hiking, exploring and more.  And for those looking for the wilder side of Havasu, known as one of the Spring Break hotspots nationwide, Havasu is not going to disappoint.

Enter early!  Not just because we might sell out at our limit of 800 athletes, but because Havasu is a popular Spring Break destination and you want to make sure you get your pick of hotel or camping spot.

Lake Havasu City is becoming known as one of the best triathlon venues in the United States.  In 2004 and 2005 Lake Havasu hosted the National Collegiate Triathlon Championships.  The Havasu Triathlon is known for one of the best swims in the sport, a very challenging bike course with little or no traffic and a very flat and very fast run.  Count on great times – both on the course and after the race.  We have deliberately chosen March 20 as our race date as it is in the heart of spring break.  It is the perfect date for that spring vacation to warm, sunny Lake Havasu City.

For information about Lake Havasu and the many recreational opportunities of the area please go to www.golakehavasu.com.

Information on lodging and camping is available below.

USA Triathlon rules will apply.  Although wetsuits are likely, the ruling on wetsuits will be made on race day.  NO DRAFTING – THERE WILL BE MARSHALLS ON THE COURSE.

AWARDS CEREMONY:  March 20, 2:30pm.  Place TBD.

TRANSPORTATION NOTE:  At first glance, Lake Havasu City may seem a little off the beaten track.  It is, however, extremely accessible and very inexpensive to get to.  Flights to Las Vegas, at the time this information was prepared, were averaging under $300 a flight from most cities.   Once in Lake Havasu City, you will not need a rental car or other transportation.  For those driving to the Havasu Triathlon, Lake Havasu City is in close proximity to major freeways, is only 4 hours from Southern California, 3 hours from Phoenix and only 2 hours from Las Vegas.

USAT AGE GROUP RULE

USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport of triathlon, instituted a new age group rule in 2005.  Your race age is your age on December 31, 2010.  Therefore, if you age up into a new age group during the calendar year, you race in that new age group for the 2010 season.  For example, Sally is 34 years old on the day of the Havasu Triathlon on March 21, 2010.  Her birthday is on July 15, 2010 and on her birthday she will turn 35.  Therefore, Sally races in the 35-39 age group for all of 2010, including the Havasu Triathlon.

If you have a birthday in 2010 that puts you in another age group, you will race with that age group in the race and leave in that age group’s wave. Using our example above, even though Sally is 34 at the Havasu Triathlon, she will race with the 35-39 women and leave in the 35-39 women’s wave.

It is the athletes responsibility to enter with their correct age and leave in the correct wave.  Athletes who race in the wrong wave will be disqualified.

REGISTRATION/PACKET PICK-UP

Registration and packet pick up will be from 3:00pm to 8:00pm on March 19. Registration will be at the Quality Inn and Suites, 271 S. Lake Havasu.

There is no registration and packet pick-up on Saturday, March 20 unless specific arrangements have been made with Tucson Racing.  Contact racedirector@tucsonracing.com for late packet pick-up.

The Havasu Triathlon is pleased to welcome the Conference Championships for the Mountain Collegiate Triathlon Conference.  Athletes from schools all across the west will be competing at the Havasu Triathlon for Championship honors.

Collegiate division awards will be given out to the top five collegiate men, and the top five collegiate women, Conference Championship trophies will be awarded to Men's Team, Women's Team and Overall Team.  A $500 check will be donated to the winning Overall Team to help defray costs of the trip to National Championships.

Collegiate athletes will have their own waves and will be scored as their own division.

All athletes, no matter age or collegiate affiliation are welcome to compete in the Havasu Triathlon.  To be eligible for the collegiate wave you must be enrolled full time in a college or university and, if your college or university has a triathlon organization, you must be a member of that organization.  You do not have to be enrolled in an MCTC school.  To be eligible for the MCTC Conference Championships scoring you must be enrolled in an MCTC school.

Only times in the Olympic distance race will count toward the MCTC championship.

For more information about the MCTC go to mctcnetwork.com

Awards Ceremony

WHEN:  March 20, 2010, after the race at 2:00pm

WHERE:  Javelina Cantina and Heat Hotel Bar just over the London Bridge on your left.

Join us for the gala Havasu Triathlon Awards Ceremony at the Javelina Cantina and the Heat Hotel Bar.  Come early to enjoy fabulous mexican food and cold hand crafted beer at the Javelina Cantina.  Don't feel like lunch?  Go to the outdoor Heat Hotel Bar in the shadows of the London Bridge and overlooking the channel.  Sip some of their fabulous drinks and enjoy the unending parade of boats and people going by in the channel.  The Javelina Cantina and the Heat Hotel Bar are right next to each other so you won't miss a thing at either place.  Yes, we do realize we have been crowded in the past and are grateful to the Heat Hotel for opening their bar to us and giving us plenty of space to spread out and enjoy some great food and drinks after the Havasu Triathlon.

EVENT PARKING
There is plenty of parking.  Limited parking is available at Windsor 4. Please be advised that Windsor 4 parking is very limited as the  most of the parking lot will be used for the transition to the bike course.  There is a city lot on London Bridge Road, next to the Hampton Inn that has limited parking as well.  Please do not park inside the cones as the bike exit goes through the middle of the lot.  There is unlimited parking in the strip mall across the street from the Hampton Inn.  This parking is about 400 meters from the transition area.

Sprint
Swim course overview (click map to view)

The swim will be in Lake Havasu.  The start will be on the beach at Windsor 4.  Wave 1 will start at 7:30am and waves will be approximately 5 minutes apart.  The sprint race will be starting first.

OLY:  Athletes will swim out into the lake, making a U-turn toward the Channel, keeping the shoreline on their right.  Approximately 200 meters from the bridge, athletes will make another U-turn back along the channel to the swim exit.  SPRINT:  Athletes will not enter the channel.

The water in Lake Havasu in March is typically a little chilly.   The last 4 years water temperature has been in the mid 60s.  We are virtually certain that this will be a wetsuit swim.

WETSUIT RENTAL

Looking for a wetsuit rental? CLICK HERE to rent your wetsuit from Xterra Wetsuits.
XTERRA is also our preferred wetsuit rental partner. As you know, the water temperature will be in the low 60s for the race in Lake Havasuand wetsuits are strongly encouraged. Though it is a short swim no matter the distance of the swim you are doing, most athletes will want a wetsuit for buoyancy and warmth. Don't have one? No problem-- XTERRA provides an inexpensive and easy solution-- rent one for the week by visiting their rental shop-- CLICK HERE for more information about Xterra wetsuit rentals.
