The TEMPE INTERNATIONAL TRIATHLON is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best triathlons in the west.  Once again, The Tempe International Triathlon sets the standard with:

Arizona Club Championships

Y

ou do not have to be a member  of a club to enter the Tempe International Triathlon. But if you are a member of a club, the Arizona Club Championships is a great way to compete with your teammates, go after that Championship Trophy and meet athletes from other clubs.

Club Rules:

Entries
1)       Athletes are responsible for their own entries.  No entries will be accepted from a club or club representative.

2)       A roster of all club entries will be sent to all clubs (or posted on the website) 10 days before the event. This is as a courtesy only.  It is the responsibility of the individual athlete to make changes in his or her club information.

3)       The club list will be posted at registration the day before the event.  At close of registration absolutely NO changes will be allowed by either athletes or clubs.  The club list will be final for scoring purposes.  It is the responsibility of the athlete to check his or her entry and to request correction if necessary.

4)       Club results will be announced at the awards ceremony.

 Eligibility

 1)        Each participant must be a member of the club for at least 30 days and be in good standing and have met all membership requirements of that club.  If a member of a training company or coach based team then the participant must be paying for all training and coaching fees as typically charged by the training company or coach.  For the purposes of racing in the Tempe International Triathlon, “training companies” or coaches cannot give scholarships, honorary memberships, free coaching, etc. for the purposes of competition in the club championships.

 Wave Starts

 1)       All club participants shall be entered in and start in the waves of their respective age groups.  Irregardless of the ruling made for the triathlon in general, if a club athlete does not start in his or her proper wave then any points won shall be forfeited and not count toward his or her club total.

2)       Small Club Division – Less than 20 members entered
3)       Team Vitesse “Best Looking Team Award”

USAT AGE GROUP RULE

USA Triathlon, the governing body of the sport of triathlon, instituted a new age group rule in 2005.  Your race age is your age on December 31, 2010.  Therefore, if you are age up into a new age group during the calendar year, you race in that new age group for the entire 2010 season.  For example, Harry is 34 years old on the day of the Tempe International Triathlon on May 18, 2010.  His birthday is on July 15, 2010 and on his birthday he will turn 35.  Therefore, Harry races in the 35-39 age group for all of 2010, including the Tempe International Triathlon.

If you have a birthday in 2010 that puts you in another age group, you will race with that age group in the race and leave in that age group’s wave. Using our example above, even though Harry is 34 at the Tempe International Triathlon, he will race with the 35-39 men and leave in the 35-39 men’s wave.

It is the athletes responsibility to enter with their correct age and leave in the correct wave.  Athletes who race in the wrong wave will be disqualified.

Local Information

The City of Tempe, Arizona is the state's seventh largest city, is located in the center of the Valley of the Sun with more than 160,000 residents calling it home. The City of Tempe, Arizona is bordered by Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler. Access to Tempe is a snap with the Loop 101, 202, US 60, I-10 and Hohokam Expressway serving Tempe, making us the most accessible city in the metropolitan area. And, we are only 10 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport with taxi service and public transportation available seven days a week. The City of Tempe, Arizona offers more than 300 days a year of sunshine to its residents and visitors, and annual rainfall amounts to approximately 7.36 inches a year.

In 1865, the U.S. Army arrived at the eastern end of the Salt River Valley and established Fort McDowell. After the arrival of the cavalry came Caucasian pioneers including Wickenburg entrepreneur Jack Swilling, who directed the renovation of the Hohokam canals, and town "founder" Charles Trumbull Hayden, who built a flour mill and began a ferry service across the Salt River.

"Hayden's Ferry," as the city was called then, was also the name of the only vehicle across the Rio Salado. The town grew slowly with mercantiles, saloons and other businesses along the dusty main street Mill Avenue, and was renamed the City of "Tempe" Arizona (Tem-PEE) by an English traveler who compared the area to the beautiful Vale of Tempe in Greece.

In 1886, the Arizona Territorial Normal School welcomed its first class of 31 students in the structure known today as Old Main on Arizona State University's campus. The college town and farming community grew steadily and quietly until post-World War II's Baby Boom pushed Tempe's city limits against the neighboring communities in every direction. In most recent years, corporate America has rediscovered and redefined the City of Tempe, Arizona much the same way Hayden "discovered" the home of the Pimas, who had "discovered" the home of the Hohokam.

Downtown Tempe offers all types of entertainment options to fit any desires. No where else in Arizona can one experience a Broadway show at a Frank Lloyd Wright designed theatre, see an NFL football game, choose from more than 75 places to eat, shop at brand name stores, climb a mini-mountain, kayak on a two-mile lake, take in an independent film, view works of art and stroll under shady trees - all within a one mile radius

The downtown area has grown to become a unique, pedestrian-friendly place to live, work and play. Shady brick sidewalks, turn of the century buildings, historic landmarks, and Arizona State University, "A" mountain and Tempe Town Lake all make Downtown Tempe the place to be for dining, shopping and nightlife.
